Waiakea Water Design Bottle That Breaks Down in 15 Years For Packaging

One reason Waiakea Water stands out from other bottled water companies is because the water come from springs in Hawaii. The water they sell is volcanic water that is filtered. It runs through 14,000 feet of volcanic rock that is porous. The company is working on a biodegradable bottle that will come out in 2018.

The company uses vehicles to deliver the water that uses very low emissions. They have been certified Carbon Neutral. About 3% of their revenue goes to community projects and nonprofit organizations. Watch this video on Youtube.

When a liter of water is purchased the company donates bottled water to those in need in Malawi. They usually a one week supply. The new bottles they plan to manufacture will be made of 100% recyclable plastic. These water bottles will break down in 15 years or less.

Waiakea Water made the first additive added to plastic bottles that makes them biodegradable. It is a partner of a company called TimePlast. This additive makes their bottles degrade 97% faster. It is the first company to use this additive in manufacturing the plastic bottles.

This new plastic bottle will have a much shorter footprint. It took the company five years, tons of research, and 1,200 experiments to come up with this additive. The company has actively invested in improving the environment. The new plastic is not harmful to the environment when it breaks down. When the company adopted nano technology this cut down the cost of production of the bottles.


Their program Pump Aid focuses on bringing water to some of the poorest countries in the world. In Africa it is estimated that women spend many hours during the year gathering water that is contaminated. Water borne illness kills more people than wars.
